World University Handball Championship off to a start!

Championships 30 July 2018

Can a new country challenge the Big 5 this time?

RIJEKA — Handball has been part of the World University Championship calendar since 1963 and it is with great fanfare that the 24th edition is being flagged off in Rijeka, Croatia.

A total of 57 countries have participated in the event since its start, and but the title of World University Champion has been limited to just 5 of them so far – Spain, Romania, Brazil, Czech Republic and Portugal. Will a new country stamp its authority this time round?

The field is large – with 345 student-athletes competing in Rijeka, this Championship will be third largest ever held, after Venezia 2008 and Guimeraes 2014. The participants will participate over a week in a friendly yet competitive atmosphere, and at the same time will make new friends and experience new cultures.

Along with medals, the athletes will also be vying for individual awards like best scorer, best goalkeeper, most valuable player and fair play.

The defending champions from the last WUC Handball Championship are Spain, in the women’s competition and Romania in men’s. Watch this space to keep you updated on all the action. Keep a tab on all the results right here.
