9th WUC Squash – Overview Day 7: Host wins Team Finals

Championships 12 September 2016

KUALA LUMPUR“It’s do or die right now, you gotta push to the end!” A pep talk from Malaysia’s national coach, Ong Beng Hee spurred third singles, Sanjay Singh Chal to greater heights as a rejuvenated Sanjay stormed back to win the remaining two games against Hong Kong’s Wong Chi Him, 11-9, 11-7 to clinch the hosts winning point in the mixed team event.

Sanjay, majoring in Business in University of Malaya, looked down and out of the contest after surrendering meekly in the third game game, 1-11. Then came Beng Hee’s rallying call. “After the third game, Beng Hee was saying that I was flagging, I didn’t up the pace. You gotta push to the end, you don’t want to disappoint Malaysia. With the crowd behind me and Malaysia in my heart, I managed to pull through for the win.”

Sanjay won the deciding game, 11-8, 4-11, 1-11, 11-9, 11-7 in 57 minutes to settle the contest 2-1.

With both of the first two ties following according to seeds, with Low Wee Wern and Yip Tsz Fung winning their first two ties.

Top seed and men’s champion, Yip Tsz Fung won his opening tie, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9 against Ivan Yuen, his opponent in the individual final, in 44 minutes.

Women’s individual champion, Wee Wern levelled the tie with a 11-5, 11-4, 11-5 victory over Tong Tsz Wing in a repeat of the women’s final, after 32 minutes.

Then came Sanjay’s heroics and as they say everything is history, securing their first overall title since the championship began in 1996.

With Malaysia’s win in the mixed team event, hosts, Malaysia achieved its best ever haul in the history of the WUSC since 1996 with two golds (women’s individual – Wee Wern & mixed team), silver (men’s individual – Ivan) & bronze (women’s individual – Nazihah Hanis).
