9th WUC Squash – Overview Day 3

Championships 7 September 2016

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia will be gunning for their first gold medal since a decade ago after top seed, Low Wee Wern checked into the final of the women’s individual event at the Nicol David Arena, Bukit Jalil yesterday 7 September. The Kolej Damansara Utama student will seek to emulate predecessor, Lim Yoke Wah who delivered Malaysia’s first ever gold at a WUSC since the 5th edition held at Szeged, Hungary in 2006.

But for her opponent, Nazihah Hanis Abd Razak, it was a disappointing end to the participation in the WUSC 2016 as she had to withdraw with the score favouring Low Wee Wern 7-5 in the second game due to a foot injury.

“For the sport we have to sacrifice the timings for the game as I also just came back from China Open and had to compete after a day’s rest.  Individually we have to adjust our timings to get the ample rest to compete.  I also never got much training on the glass court for this match and will be practicing first thing in the morning to compete in the Finals.”

Nazihah said: “I was wanting to give her a challenge and take a game off her when I was down 5-6, when this unfortunate thing happened. I slipped and overstretched when I was going for the shot”, added the International Islamic School Malaysia (IISM) student who had to withdraw due to a hamstring injury.

As expected, Wee Wern will meet second seed, Tsz Wing Tong from Hong Kong who overcame surprise semi-finalist, 5/8 seed, Nada Mohamed Mahmoud Moha Elkalaawy from Great Britain, 11-4, 11-4, 11-3 in 24 minutes.

Championship favourite, Tsz Fung Yip put aside his friendship to qualify for the men’s final of this 9th World University Squash Championship after defeating training mate, Chi Him Wong in the men’s semi-final at the glass court today. Fung Yip won a closely contested match against compatriot, Him Wong from Hong Kong, 11-2, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7 in 42 minutes.

“We are playing and training together so it made it extra hard for me. I won the first set so it made it easier for me,” said the City University of Hong Kong student.

His opponent in the final, Ivan Yuen will be carrying the hopes of the host nation of bagging the double for the first time since the inception of WUSC in 1996 as he battled his way to a 11-7, 12-10, 12-14, 11-5 victory against the second seed, Joshua Masters from Great Britain.

“I’m excited and looking forward to the final tomorrow. We have played against each other many times, tomorrow it’s a different ball game.”
