Wrestling 13 July 2014

PESC – After the final day of the Greco-Roman style closing the 11th World University Wrestling Championship, we can definitely say that this style was dominated by the wrestlers of the host country, winning five gold medals out of eight.

In the 66 kg category, the Hungarian Krisztián Jäger caused great surprise to everyone as he has won in his weight category. He was really confident in the final as well against the Turkish Islamov, which was the last bout of the whole 2014 WUC Wrestling too. “This is the biggest success of my life so far. Sometimes I was close to the podium, but now I can say that I am a University World Champion”, a happy Jäger commented.

In the 75 kg category, László Szabó has won the gold medal after diverse bouts. His biggest opponent was the Polish Kulynycz in the semi-final. “Kulynycz is a really good wrestler, it was a hard bout against him. I am in good shape as I was in a training camp for 6 weeks just before this competition and this was the key to my victory. In the final, the Ukrainian Kukhta marked and unexpected point, but fortunately I could win easily. I am really happy with the gold medal, I am in the middle of the preparation for the FILA World Championship, so my wrestling will even be better”, the winner of 75 kg said.

In the 85 kg category, Metehan Basar from Turkey was the better out of the ten wrestlers in this weight category. He has beaten the Bulgarian Bayryakov in the final with 3-1.

In the 130 kg category, the Hungarian Bálint Lám won against the Turkish Guzel in the final. The host country’s wrestler was very happy after the bout against the European champion. “What can I say? I am very happy as I have beaten the Turkish wrestler in a really difficult bout. I made some mistakes during this exhausting day, but I wanted to win. I don’t stop until the World University Championship’s gold medal was mine, Bálint Lám explained.

With the five gold medals, Hungary has won the team competition, Turkey finished in second place, and the representative of Poland got the cup for the third place.

The closing ceremony took place in the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, where Dr. Gyula Zeller, vice-rector of the University of Pécs and president of the OC, Chen Fave Seetow, member of FISU gave their speech.
