Almaty stages Short Track Test Event for 2017 WU

ALMATY – On 21 October, the second stage of the Kazakhstan Short Track Cup will kick-off in Baluan Sholak Sports Palace. This second stage of the Cup will serve as a test event for the 28th Winter Universiade in 2017 in Almaty City. The event will last until 23 October.

Despite the fact that short track is a developing sport in Kazakhstan, the growth of development has been most noticeable. Athletes of the national team, for the first time in history, reached the finals of the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi and in the World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championship, where Kazakh skater Denis Nikisha won a bronze medal.

The main aim of this competition is to promote short track in regional sport schools. The second stage of the Kazakhstan Short Track Cup is an important event among speed skaters in the country. Young and promising skaters, who will establish perfect results in the upcoming event, will get a chance to compete in 2017 at the WU. 8 teams from 8 regions of Kazakhstan are going to take part in the Second stage of the Cup, i.e. from the regions West Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Kostanay, East Kazakhstan, Atyrau, South Kazakhstan and the cities Almaty and Astana.

The event also serves as a test event for the 28th Winter Universiade in 2017. It’s an opportunity to test and check the preparedness of all services and the venue. Also, the 70 volunteers, who are involved will also show their readiness.
