Universiades 2019: Presentation of the Candidature Dossier

Winter Games 14 September 2013

Peshkova Ekaterina, vice-Gouvernor of the Krasnoyarsk Region

BRUSSELS Today 14 September, the cities that are candidate for the organisation of the 2019 Winter and Summer Universiades presented their bidding dossiers to FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien during a meeting held in the FIDSU office in Brussels, Belgium. FISU First Vice-President Oleg Matytsin (RUS) and FISU Vice-President Luciano Cabral (BRA) were also present.

The meeting started with a warm welcome by FISU Secretary General/CEO Eric Saintrond to the delegation of Krasnoyarsk (RUS) concerning the Winter Universiade, as well as to those of Baku (AZE), Budapest (HUN) and Brasilia (BRA) regarding the Summer Universiade. The delegation of Valais, which was initially a candidate for the organisation of the 2019 WU, was not present. In fact, Valais has withdrawn its candidature but plans to bid for the 2021 games.

Eric Saintrond then presented a video about the Kazan 2013 Universiade.

FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien took the floor and welcomed the delegations.

“Some cities had to bid two, three and even five times before being attributed a Universiade. On the other hand, bidding for the first time does not mean that you will not be selected to organise the games”, Mr Gallien declared to the members of the delegations.

He then invited each Head of Delegation to present their candidature and give their bidding dossier, which was sealed so that it could no longer be modified.

“This is a very important day for the region and the citizens of Krasnoyarsk. We are eager to show the whole world what a genuine winter is by organising the 2019 Winter Universiade”, Ekaterina Peshkova, Vice-Governor of the region of Krasnoyarsk, declared.

“The city of Baku has never organised such a big event. Therefore, the organisation of the Summer Universiade would allow to promote sport in Azerbaijan and improve sports facilities in a city where the youth has an increasing importance”, Tofig Khanaliyev, the President of the NUSF of Azerbaijan, said.Tofig Khanaliyev, President of the NUSF from Azerbaïdjan

“Hungary has always been involved in university sport. In 2017 the city of Györ will host the Olympic Youth Festival and in 2021 Budapest will be the host of the FINA World Championships. We would like to organise the Universiade between those two events in order to make the best of the media coverage of the Universiade”, Dr Zoltan Mauzsa, the Deputy Secretary of State for Higher Education and Science, declared.

“Brazil will host the FIFA World Cup in 2014 as well as the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. Therefore, we consider that 2019 will be the right time to organise the Summer Universiade in Brasilia”, Julio Cesar Ribeiro (Brasilia), the Secretary for Sport of Brazil, explained.

After the presentation of the bidding dossiers, Eric Saintrond reminded the delegations of the dates set for the inspection of venues in the different cities (between 16 September and 20 October). He then drew lots to determine the order in which the final presentations will be made on 9 November 2013 in the Dolce Hotel in Brussels. Those presentations will be immediately followed by the attribution of the 2019 Winter and Summer Universiades.
