GWANGJU – Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine took home his share of hardware as the last of the medals were awarded for artistic gymnastics. Verniaev is student at the National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine focusing his studies on becoming a coach once his time on the floor finishes. After claiming six of the seven possible medaling finishes, Verniaev is far from retirement, “Overall, I was satisfied with the way I performed this year in Gwangju. Some events I was not happy with the results, but am confident that I can get better from here.”

Prideful representation of his country is nothing new for a world-class gymnast such as Verniaev. At the age of 21 he has competed in multiple international competitions including the World Championships, European Games, the 2012 London Olympic Games, and the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, where he took home the Bronze in the Men’s All-Around.
This year, Verniev has improved in his performance claiming Gold in the Men’s All-Around. “After the London Olympics and Universiade in Kazan I intensified my training while remaining consistent in my efforts. A big part of gymnastics is pushing yourself to get out of your comfort zone.”
Coming home with two Gold, one Silver, and four Bronze medals at the 2015 Gwangju Universiade has left him thirsty for more. “From here I plan to set my focus on training for Worlds and the 2016 Olympics in Rio,” said Vernianev. “I am confident and excited to continue my training in preparation for more success I have ahead of me.”
