President of Tatarstan meets with FISU Officials

FISU 29 January 2014

KAZAN The capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan, can become a permanent venue for the festival of the International University Sports Federation – the FISU Gala Awarding Ceremony. This topic was discussed on 28 January at the meeting that Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov had with FISU 1st Vice-President and President of the Russian Student Sports Union (RSSU) Oleg Matytsin, and FISU Secretary-General/CEO Eric Saintrond.

The meeting took place in the white hall of the Kazan City Hall, immediately after the presentation of the Russian Federation National Awards to representatives of the Republic of Tatarstan for contributing to an outstanding success of the 27th Summer Universiade.

Rustam Minnikhanov thanked the FISU officials for attending the awards ceremony. “We have established good relationships with the International University Sports Federation and we will keep them going”, the President of Tatarstan said.

FISU 1st Vice-President Oleg Matytsin informed that the FISU executives seek to further cooperate with the Republic of Tatarstan and the specialists who have gained unrivalled expertise during the preparation and staging of the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan. “There are several projects that FISU can implement in Kazan with the support from the Republic of Tatarstan leadership”, he commented.

For instance, the FISU Gala Awarding Ceremony, the first edition of which was organised in Kazan in September 2012, can become a regular event organised by FISU, and the capital of Tatarstan stands a chance of being chosen as its permanent venue. It is assumed that the FISU Gala will be held every two years. “You have experience of hosting such events, and it will come in useful in the preparation for the FISU Gala”, Oleg Matytsin said. He also added that this topic will be discussed in detail at the FISU EC meeting.

Collaboration in the context of the FISU International Education Centre, which was opened in Kazan at the premises of Volga Region Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism, might be another option for cooperation. The FISU executives expressed interest in holding training workshops, educational programmes and other international events at the IEC.
