CAPE COAST – Ghanaian table tennis player Derek Abrefa is ready to compete at the Universiade this year in Taipei after he won the table tennis singles men’s event at the 7th Mini Ghana University Sports Association Games at the University of Cape Coast.

The event which was held in commemoration of the 50th anniversary celebration of the GUSA was an important one for the Ghanaian top seed table tennis player after he announced himself to the table tennis in Africa when he defeated former African champion, Congo Brazzaville’s Saka Suraju 3-1 in Ghana’s 3-1 win over the host of the 2015 African Games during the group matches of the men’s team event, which ensured Ghana a medal at the games.

Derek who recently got an education scholarship to study at the University of Cape Coast was thrilled to play in front of his home fans as he sailed through the events to the winners podium. “When I was growing up, I heard Ghana was a great Table Tennis nation and we had star players like Ethel Jacks and others who were terrors in Africa. I want to be like them”. He looks set to be one of the stars from the Ghanaian team for this year’s Universiade in Taipei.
