FISU and IOC shake hands ahead of Universiades in 2019

IOC President sends best wishes to student-athletes ahead of Krasnoyarsk 2019 and Napoli 2019

LAUSANNE – FISU President Oleg Matytsin and Secretary General Eric Saintrond enjoyed a productive meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach in the Olympic Capital, with the 2019 Summer and Winter Universiades on top of the agenda. With preparations reaching the final stages for both events, President Bach expressed the IOC’s best wishes to student-athletes across the world training to qualify for and compete in next year’s Universiades.

While in Lausanne, President Matytsin also attended the IF Forum. The Forum is an event that brings together the leaders of the Olympic and non-Olympic International Federations (IFs) alike, around the subject of new technologies and their sporting applications. It is also an opportunity to FISU to further develop its partnerships with the IFs, whose assistance is critical to ensuring FISU’s competitions remain of the highest quality.

“As a proud member of the Olympic Movement, FISU is always conscious of the cooperation required for us to achieve the goal that we share with so many: to help young people learn and grow thanks to their experiences of sport,” said President Matytsin. “To have so many willing partners is a great sign of how widely recognised FISU’s role is in contributing to the success of a wider sporting ecosystem.”

During the meeting with President Bach, President Matytsin also extended FISU’s thanks to the IOC for its hospitality in accommodating a University Sports House during the recent Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games. He also updated Dr Bach on the progress of FISU Ambassadors’ programme as well as informed him about the first meeting of the newly established FISU Academic Advisory Board, which took place in Lausanne in September.

Both President Matytsin and Secretary General Saintrond also took the opportunity to personally express their condolences to the IOC President, following the passing of IOC Member, GAISF President and FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann. Mr Baumann had been a key part of the creation of the FISU World University League for 3×3 Basketball and his life will be commemorated at the League’s forthcoming 2018 finals in Xiamen.
