Ekat2023 Logo Design Contest

EKATERINBURG — When it comes to capturing the mood, the people, and the sentiment of the 32nd FISU Summer World University Games, the cream of the crop from Russia’s creative ranks have submitted their efforts. Twenty-four agencies have bid to have their work represent the Games, with top firms from Ekaterinburg, Moscow and Kazan all presenting their logo designs.

The logo of a sports tournament is the most important symbol of any competition, which lives in people’s memories long after the event ends, sometimes even decades after the cauldron is extinguished. A striking example is the logo of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow: the Spasskaya Tower of the Kremlin, composed of curved lines of sports tracks with a star at the top.

The competition commission will choose the best graphic symbol of the Games, with experts from numerous fields coming together to make the selection. The commission is comprised of: Alisa Prudnikova, the head of strategic projects of the Pushkin state museum of fine arts; Alexander Fayfman, the general producer of Channel One television station; actress Victoria Tolstoganova; filmmaker Fedor Bondarchuk; Igor Gurovich, an academic for the Russian Academy of graphic design; Fedor Telkov, photographer and researcher of the Urals; Maxim Urazov, the director of the department of physical education and mass sports of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation; and Alexander Chernov, General Director of the Games. The jury is headed up by the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region, Evgeny Kuyvashev.

World University Games logos are always based on the Latin letter U and are complemented by elements that reflect the character and identity of the host region. With Ekaterinburg’s robust history in mining, the theme of gems and malachite, which became a real Ural brand, stand a chance to be part of the winning look.

“The logo is the symbol by which many will get acquainted with the Sverdlovsk region and Ekaterinburg, where the FISU Summer World University Games will be held in 2023,” said jury chairman Kuyvashev. “We have to choose from the works submitted to the competition that which has incorporated the most striking Ural images and meanings. The logo should reflect the features of the place where we live, the energy of the Urals and our love of sports.”

The jury included people whose daily work is related to creativity and visualization of images. Designer Gurovich promises that he will react to the selection of the winner with all responsibility.

“A logo is not a picture for the sake of a picture. This is a symbol in which its authors must put several levels of meanings and accurately formulated interpretations of these meanings,” Gurovich said. “I am very interested to see how it will be possible to combine the images of the Urals, sports and energy of Ekaterinburg. The logo does not have to be liked by everyone. It should become a tool with which the city can tell about itself. I want the logo to be remembered and to remain an important cultural myth of the place after years.”

Added the FISU Summer WUG 2023 General Director Alexander Chernov: “I am grateful to everyone who agreed to take part in the work of the jury. The composition is a sight for sore eyes! I do not doubt that such a dream team will cope with the task and will make a choice that we all will be proud of.”

The competition committee will announce its decision before the end of July.
