President Matytsin visits Hiroshima to discuss university sports projects

FISU 21 November 2017

The visit was organised by the President of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Morinari Watanabe, Japanese University Sports Board (JUSB) and FISU Executive Committee Member Hisato Igarashi.

During the stay, President Matytsin visited the sports venues of Hiroshima and met with the Governor of the Hiroshima Prefecture Hidehiko Yuzaki and the mayor of Hiroshima Kazumi Matsui. FISU, JUSB and the authorities of Hiroshima agreed to work together in order to promote cohesion and unity among students and to prevent violence, hatred and conflicts, all hallmarks of international peace.

Hiroshima was the scene of one of the most tragic and brutal pages in the history of humankind. On 6 August 1945 it became the target of the first nuclear bombing, which destroyed the city and killed more than 100 000 people.

The FISU President visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and laid flowers to commemorate the victims. According to President Matytsin, the lessons of Hiroshima should always be remembered, and the humankind should make every effort to ensure that such tragedies never repeat.
