WUC medal winners felicitated in Portugal

With one of the most successful World University Championship years recently behind us, the Portuguese University Sports Federation acknowledged the efforts and talent of ten university athletes who made Portugal proud during the 2018 WUC season.

The year 2018 was a successful one for the world University Championships in general, with 32 stand-alone events that made for a calendar full of quality competitions. There were three Championships in particular where Portuguese student-athletes excelled; these were Futsal, where the women’s team won bronze, Downhill Mountain Biking and Handball where the Portuguese men finished fourth.

Partnering with Jogos Santa Casa (a social games managing institution), FADU felicitated the medals winners at these Championships, and also honoured José Rebelo – a third year medical student at Universidade do Porto – for his outstanding contribution in getting Portugal to fourth place finish at the World University Handball Championships.

There was a clear emphasis on celebrating the athletes’ commitment to academics and FADU President Daniel Monteiro said, “We must recognise the merit of all student-athletes who dedicate themselves daily to a dual career.”

The medalists from the World University Cycling Championships, which took place in Braga, Portugal were David Martins who won gold in Downhill MTB and João Pereira and Ana Moreira who both won brzone in the same discipline.

As single sport competitions, World University Championship events give cities and universities a chance to host a major international sports event with a minimum cost and complexity. The 2020 World University Championship calendar and all other information can be found here.
