Polish University Sports Federation celebrates successes in 2019

FISU 11 December 2019

The city of Bydgoszcz in northern Poland hosted a Gala of University Sport to sum up a successful year

This year, the annual Gala of University Sport in Poland coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Student Sport Club at the Kazimierz Wielki University.

At this annual event, the Polish University Sport Federation (AZS) awarded the best universities, Polish university sport champions as well as European and international medallists. Special attention was paid to athletes who participated in the Winter and Summer Universiades.

AZS also celebrated its student-athletes with disabilities, who set a Guinness World Record in bocce (team) marathon. Their story also received a lot of interest from Polish media.

The ideas of fair play and equal opportunities are actively promoted by the Polish University Sport Federation. Due such initiatives, a new project was launched by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Ministry of Sport and Tourism enabling student-athletes to pursue a dual career. This project is at an early stage but is an important step for AZS.

“Student-athletes are the core of our activities,” said AZS President Professor Alojzy Nowak. “However, we would not be able to celebrate our victories without all those involved including rectors, doctors and many others contributing to our success.”

Looking ahead, the AZS is looking forward to hosting the 2020 WUC Mind Sports in Bydgoszcz and WUC Futsal in Poznan.
