Polish University Sport Federation celebrates the movement’s annual achievements

University Sport Gala hosted in the modern, and culturally significant, Opera Nova Theatre of Bydgoszcz

The Polish University Sport Federation (AZS) awarded the best universities, Polish university sport champions as well as European and World University medalists in a solemn ceremony that coincided with the 50th anniversary of the student sport club in the University of Kazimierz the Great. This year’s event paid special attention to the Polish teams coming in Krasnoyarsk and Napoli for the 2019 Winter and Summer Universiades. AZS also celebrated the country’s student-athletes with disabilities, one of whom set a Guinness World Records in the boccia marathon event, with the story garnering notable media interest in Poland.

With the expressed mission to promote fair play and equal opportunities on and off the field of play, 2019 saw AZS initiate a new project with the Ministry of Science and High Education, and the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, that enables more student-athletes to pursue dual career. This project might still just be in the beginning stages, but the initiative represents a very important step up to arrange individual university curriculum for professional athletes.

“Student-athletes are the core of our activities, however, we would not be able to celebrate our victories without rectors, doctors, masseurs and many others contributing to our success,” said AZS President, Dr. Alojzy Nowak during the Gala. Nowak was joined on stage by FISU Executive Committee Member and AZS Vice-President Marian Dymalski for the awarding of the best Polish universities.

While the biennial Universiade calendar waits until 2021 for the next event edition, next year looks poised to be a significant one for the AZS. In 2020, this year’s Gala host city Bydgoszcz – inspired by its successful 2018 World University Shooting Sport Championship, now turns its burgeoning sport events operations to running both the World University Championships in Mind Sports in Canoe Sprint in 2020.
