FISU 30 May 2012

CEARA – During a press conference in the auditorium of Castelão stadium that is being built to host matches of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the Brazilian Confederation University Sports and the Government of Ceará launched the First International Cup of University Surfing. The first edition of the championship is scheduled to take place between November 9th and 11th, 2012.

At least 16 countries are expected to participate. The secretary of sports in the state of Ceará, Gony Arruda, emphasized that the realization of the International University Surfing Cup adds to other examples of the Government’s commitment to host big events such as the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. “Besides, it is a stimulus to the sport by students,” added Alvarez.

This achievement is important to bring another high level sporting event to Ceará, Gony Arruda adds to the partnership between the president of the Brazilian Confederation of University Sport, Luciano Cabral, and the Brazilian Association of University Surfing, presided by Ailton Junior. “The result of this partnership is already clear. And we are guaranteed the support to hold the event in our state over the next three years”, Junior Ailton.

“Surfing has become a very strong sport throughout the world, but is still not officially recognized in the international university system. Ceará will write history as the forerunner of the world university surf sports scene”, says Luciano Cabral.

In addition to the State Secretary of Sports, the realization of the International University Surfing Cup also has the support of the Fortaleza’s Department of Sport and Recreation and Ceará University Sports Federation.
