Great Britain’s Sochi Olympics Delegation brimming with Former WU Participants

LONDON - BUCS are delighted to report that the delegation selected for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi is bursting with former university students and participants of recent Winter Universiades.

The Great Britain Women’s Olympic curling team will be captained by Anna Sloan, a former Glasgow Caledonian student and veteran of the 25th Winter Universiade held in Erzurum, Turkey (2011). Her team will include other Erzurum participants Vicki Adams (West of Scotland), Claire Hamilton (Strathclyde) and Lauren Gray (Glasgow) who’s impressive CV also boasts participation in the most recent university games hosted just before Christmas in Trentino, Italy. Callum Smith (Edinburgh) was also present at Trentino and has reserved a seat on the plane to Russia where he will represent Great Britain in Cross Country Skiing.

Posy Musgrave, a former Birmingham University student who starred in cross country skiing at the 24th Harbin Winter Universiade (2009) has also been selected for Sochi as have Nicholas Buckland and Penny Coomes (formerly Nottingham Trent) who will hope to use their university experience as they prepare for the Olympic figure skating competition. Futher congratulations to Jack Whelbourne and Charlotte Gilmartin (formerly Loughborough College) who will represent Great Britain in short track speed skating.

It is testament to the Winter Universiade that so many Olympic athletes from both Great Britain and abroad have passed through its ranks.
