FISU Delegation inspects Almaty

Winter Games 10 December 2015

ALMATY – A FISU delegation chaired by the recently elected President Oleg Matytsin has visited Kazakhstan to inspect the process of preparations for the 28th Winter Universiade 2017.

During the visit, the delegation met with the head of the Organizing Committee of the Winter Universiade 2017, the Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Dariga Nazarbayeva and the Mayor of Almaty Bauyrzhan Baibek. Further steps for preparation of the Winter Universiade were discussed.

“During the meeting with the head of the Organizing Committee, the preparation process for the Winter Universiade was discussed. Strong confidence was expressed that the event will proceed successfully and Kazakhstan will enter history as a country and a reliable partner for the organisation of another large-scale international sports project”, Oleg Matytsin said.

The FISU representatives noted the high level of development of sports infrastructure. “Kazakhstan is actively developing its sports infrastructure. It is crucial that the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Government and the Akimat of Almaty are increasingly focusing on sports and sports’ social component. In this regard, we see that this is a government programme; it is aimed at the youth and assumes the use of sports facilities not only within the framework of international competitions, but also the use of facilities by the population of the city, the country, and especially by the younger generation”, the FISU President commented.

The FISU leaders are confident that the Universiade in Kazakhstan will become a model for the next winter events. “We have been waiting for this event many years since Almaty was selected as the host city in 2011. We hope that this Universiade will set an example for future FISU Winter Universiades”, FISU Secretary General/CEO Eric Saintrond added.

In turn, the head of the Directorate of the Universiade in Almaty Asset Abdualiyev stressed the dynamics of cooperation with FISU. “We are pleased that we have established positive dynamics of cooperation with FISU. There is support at the level of the head of the Organizing Committee, the Almaty Akimat, and national federations. We are confident that the Universiade will be not just a competition, but also a sports holiday for all Almaty residents, Kazakhstan’s residents and foreign guests. After the Universiade, all venues will be available to the citizens”, Asset Abdualiyev said.
