Brazilian Chess and Table Tennis League ranks Four Athletes for 2011 SU

Multisports 31 May 2011

BRASILIA High level contests in the premiere edition of the Brazilian University League of Chess and Table Tennis 2011 from May 25th to 29th. The competition qualified four athletes who will represent Brazil at the 2011 Summer Universiade, in China.

Jefferson dos Santos, athlete and student of UniSant’anna (São Paulo-SP) and Vivian Heinrichs, Unip (SP), were the champions of the chess tournament. Claudia Ikezumi, Mackenzie (SP) and Lidney Castro, St. Cecilia University (SP) won the table tennis league.

Chess players from six states competed in the 2011 League and only at the last round the individual winners of the tournament were decided. Jefferson Santos and Vivian Heinrichs won six matches and had one draw in seven games and secured the national trophy and the spot for the 2011 Universiade.

“I will try to reconcile the time between college and the practice of chess to make a great championship in China and score points to win the title of international master”, Jefferson said.

Claudia Ikezumi Lidney and Castro also stamped their passport for the 2011 Universiade. They won the Individual tournament of the Table Tennis League which brought together athletes from seven states.

Claudia, 24 years, plays table tennis since she was 12 years old, and was an athlete of the Brazilian youth team. Now she wants to once more successfully represent Brazil in an international competition.

Lidney Castro needed the tie-brake of the final game to confirm the first place in the national league and the spot for the Universiade. “I will give my best to compete well at the Universiade even knowing the difficulty in searching the title in front of high-level opponents like the Chinese players. But I’ll play until the last point”, he added.

“We are very happy with the technical quality and the participation of athletes in this premiere edition of the Chess and Table Tennis League. We will be well represented in China and these athletes will certainly influence their friends and new players in their universities”, said Luciano Cabral, President of Brazilian University Sport Confederation.
