Food service management at the 2011 World University Winter Games in Erzurum provided matter for discussion of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate and the Institute of Economics, Management and Law. According to the signed cooperation agreement, the Institute is to become the centre that will provide training to catering specialists for the 2013 Summer Universiade.

A session devoted to organizing catering services during 2013 Summer Universiade was held at the Institute of Economics, Management and Law. The event was attended by Universiade Village Mayor Farid Abdulganiev, Chief of Staff of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate Larisa Sulima, Pro-Rector for Economic Affairs Asiya Timiryasova, Dean of the Department of Food Technology Elena Matveeva and the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate officials.

The Institute presented the Department of Food Technology to the session participants. The Department trains specialists in three fields: sports catering, food service industry, quality service certification and public catering facilities management. Fourth-year students majoring in sports catering demonstrated their skills in making sports cocktails and salads and represented product specifications with a full chemical composition of beverages and food.

The session participants were especially amused by food chemistry, microbiology and quality control laboratories that boast the latest and most-up-to-date equipment. At present these laboratories serve as unique training facilities for students. As Elena Matveeva stated, the Department has sufficient facilities for training students. “We do care where our students go to work after they graduate. I think that it’s a great chance for students and graduates of our Institute to unveil their potential if they get involved in preparation and delivery of such a big sporting event as the 2013 Summer Universiade,” she said.

The parties also agreed to organize an apprenticeship of the Institute’s students at dining halls of the Universiade Village and to form a catering team made up of first- and second-year students to volunteer during the 2013 Summer Universiade.
