6th World University Match Racing Championship in Nice coming up

FISU 31 August 2012

NICE – The sixth edition of the World University Match Racing Championship runs from Monday September 3rd to Saturday 8th in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), France. The opening ceremony of the event will be held on Monday, at the heart of the prestigious Villa Massena, located on the Promenade des Anglais, in the presence of Christian Estrosi, Mayor of the city. 122 athletes from 15 countries are expected at the “French Riviera”, a new participation record for this FISU event.

For the first time in FISU history, a separate women’s match racing competition will be held, in which 8 teams will compete. In the men’s competition, no less than 17 teams will compete on the superb racing area located off the Old Port of Nice. Among them, three French teams: a female crew came from Brest and skippered by Julie Bossard, 15th on the ISAF world ranking (the highest ranking at the start of the championship) and two male crews respectively from Nantes and La Rochelle, skippered by Gatien Planson (256th World ISAF) and Matthew Ricque (276th World ISAF). Worth mentioning also is the presence of Danish Suzanne Boidin, 10th at the London Olympics, while Jessica Hansen, skipper of one of the two Australian female crews is the current Australian Women’s Match Racing Champion.
