China, Mongolia get their IDUS groove going

FISU 21 September 2019

Mongolia actively celebrates the International Day of University Sport on 20 September every year since 2016. There is a tradition of organising various events at universities, not just sports competitions, but also meetings and scientific conferences.

This year, it was even more special as it is also the 30thanniversary of the Mongolian Student Sports Federation (MSSF) in addition to being FISU’s 70thanniversary year.

The MSSF organised a ‘Universiade Lesson’ in collaboration with the Mongolian National Institute of Physical Education (MNIPE).

Around 400 university students and teachers participated and discussed several topics including the activities of the NUSF as well as FISU, general information about the Universiade, a review of Mongolia’s participation at the Napoli 2019 Summer Universiade and various other related topics.

Later, there was an ‘extreme basketball’ display (right) from the Light Power club of the MNIPE which the students thoroughly enjoyed as well as a quiz competition that tested students’ knowledge about the FISU Universiade.

As part of continued celebrations of IDUS 2019, a member of MSSF in Bayan-Ulgii province will host the traditional Western Regional Universiade from 26-30 September with six sports events and nearly 400 students participating from universities of Russia, China and Kazakhstan.

In China, the Federation of University Sports China (FUSC) went all out for IDUS 2019. Celebrations started several days ago and included a ‘University High-Level Women’s Super League’ football tournament in Changchun, Jilin Province. The competition included 16 teams, with over 300 university athletes.

The 8th China University Dragon-boat Racing Tournament was held in Lanzhou, Ningxia Province where in addition to the race, almost 200 athletes from 9 different universities signed signed an IDUS pledge.

Deyang in the Sichuan Province witnessed the China U21 Youth Women’s Basketball Championship, co-hosted by FUSC and the Chinese Basketball Association which is chaired by Yao Ming. Also in Sichuan Province was the 24th China University Table Tennis Super League held in Chengdu. Over 100 athletes from 20 different universities participated in this tournament, one of the ‘rehearsal’ events ahead of the 31st Summer Universiade that will be held in Chengdu in 2021. A sporty IDUS indeed for China!
