Student Hockey Challenge gets a big thumbs up

Dinamo wins tournament as Krasnoyarsk gets ready for Real Winter

The final clash of the ‘Student Hockey Challenge’ in Krasnoyarsk was between Russia’s Dinamo (Barnaul) and Slovakia’s UMB (Banska Bystrica). It was the culmination of a week of intense competition between the best student teams from USA, Slovakia, Czech Republic and host nation Russia.

The tournament also served as a fourth test event ahead of the upcoming Krasnoyarsk 2019 Winter Universiade, for ice-hockey venues Crystal Ice Arena and Pervomaisky Ice Arena. The Main Operations Centre that will be the nerve centre during the Universiade was also tested during this week and passed with flying colours.

Eight teams started the tournament on 2 October, and it finally came down to Slovakia vs Russia in the title match. The Slovakian team UMB took the lead in the third minute of the match, but Ilya Shubovitch soon equalized for Russia’s Dinamo and sent the game to the intermission tied at 1-1.

Thanks to a brace from Jacub Tatar, the Slovakian team once again went ahead 3-1, but Maxim Chirkov of Dinamo closed the gap to 2-3. During the last minutes of the game, Ivan Pereverzev and Vladislav Povelyev pulled off a stunning victory as Dinamo won 4-3.

After the final, UMB coach Lukas Opath expressed his regret that the team didn’t win the game, but at the same time he complimented the tournament and his team’s love for hockey.

Operations ran smoothly through the week as the Main Operations Centre (MOC), located on the territory of the Siberian Federal University, was put through the grind for the first time.

During the Universiade, the MOC will house representatives of the Directorate Functional Areas, ministries and departments of the region, law enforcement agencies and other organizations - all in all, about 60 people working in shifts. The MOC is equipped with a video wall comprising several screens for live display of information. It will display in real time, the video from cameras located in different parts of the city to track participants moving around Krasnoyarsk, spectators moving in sports arenas and peripheral areas and much more.

Maxim Urazov, the Director General of ANO ‘Directorate Krasnoyarsk 2019’ said “We are holding several test events ahead of the Winter Universiade 2019. It’s great that they are also becoming special events on their own, that attract spectators. These test events give an opportunity for spectators, stadiums, venues and services to be tested.”

Next up, is the Figure Skating Russian Cup and a Short Track Speed Skating competition as the countdown clock to the Winter Universiade 2019 races ahead. Real Winter is coming soon.
