World University Cycling Championship opens in Braga

Competition to be held across 3 cities

BRAGA — The Opening Ceremony of the FISU World University Cycling Championship marked the beginning of a week full of competition that will be spread across three cities, Braga, Guimarães and Fafe.

 

More than 200 athletes representing 19 teams walked along the streets of Braga, as part of the Opening Ceremony proceedings. The student athletes from around the world marched from Arco da Porta Nova to Praça da República, which was the centre of the festivities. 

 

The competition begins with the Individual Time-Trial. The race section will be 8.63 kilometres, which will be covered three times by male athletes and twice by female athletes. The entire stretch is in Braga, between Rua José Afonso Machado and Variant do Fojo.

 

Wednesday, 1 August will see the XCO Cross Country competition which will take place in the city of Guimarães, in Santa Maria do Souto. Also on the same day, the athletes competing in the Road Race later this week, will have an opportunity to do become familiar with the course. The Women’s Road Race will cover a total of 93.91 kilometres, while the Men’s Road Race will be the longest event of he entire week, with a course of 126.37 kilometres.
