World University Badminton Championship off to a flyer!

China once again the team to beat 

  

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian capital, one of the global nerve centres of badminton, is currently home to nearly 150 top student shuttlers from around the world. The 15thedition of the FISU World University Badminton Championship is off to a start and Kuala Lumpur is playing perfect host.

 

“The facilities are good and I hope the championship will go as smoothly as possible,” said Wuer Yan, the head of mission of the Chinese team.

 

He added that he sees Malaysia as the main competitor for his squad. The Chinese team includes Peng Du, who had won gold in the women’s doubles event in the previous edition held in Russia in 2017.

 

China have already started strong in the Mixed Team competition, the first event of the WUC Badminton. A total of six gold medals are at stake – in Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Overall Champion.

 

The first day of action was also marked by the Opening Ceremony held at the Stadium Juara in Kuala Lumpur, where the court was thrown open with the official declaration ‘We intend to nurture world class talent’. The ceremony included raising of the FISU flag, the Oath of Athletes and Judges and a traditional Malaysian dance that welcomed the delegates.
