Last moves coming up in Chess Championship

Favourites strengthen positions on penultimate day

ARACAJU — The World University Chess Championship is fast hurtling towards its finalé in Brazil. At the end of 9 rounds, the cream of the best college chess players in the world is rising to the top. The competition had begun on 12 September with 48 student athletes representing 13 countries.

 

With 7 rounds already complete, the partial rankings give an idea of who’s headed towards the podium. The strongest countries overall are China, Serbia, Czech Republic and Poland. In the male category, China’s Grandmaster Lu Shanglei has been recovering after being defeated early in the competition and has broken back into the top 10, after being ousted in the early rounds. He is now in second position, followed by the Serbian Marko Nenezic. Czech Republic’s Tadeas Kriebel holds the first position as of now.

 

Among the women, China’s favourite Shiqun Ni has taken her position at the top, as per her top billing. After several rounds in the lead, Peruvian Cori T Daisy is now in third place and Brazilian Julia Alboredo remains in second place.

 

The last round of WUC Chess takes place on Tuesday, September 18 and the podium will be decided y afternoon. To check out all results, click here.
