Countdown to the 2020 FISU WUC Mind Sports Online begins

Bydgoszcz, POLAND- With two weeks to go, preparations for the 2020 FISU World University Championship (WUC) Mind Sports online are well underway and the Organising Committee is hard at work ensuring a quality event for the 2020 online edition.

Since the launch of registration in August, the 2020 FISU WUC Mind Sports online is set to host over 500 participants from around 40 countries for Chess and Bridge competitions. Chess will host over 70 university-level teams, while around 30 bridge teams will also be online. The final list of entries will be published on Friday 16 October here.

As part of the virtual format, matches will be played across two online platforms called Tornelo and Bridge Base Online (BBO) for Chess and Bridge competitions respectively.

“Tornelo is a very good platform to organise events of a larger scale,” said Łukasz Turlej, Vice President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). “It is the online one that guarantees full control of games to arbiters and it deals with disconnection problems.”

Tornelo is no stranger to events of this scale and is a platform that was used to host 750 players from 60 locations at the European Youth Online Chess Championship and the European Corporate Online Championship.

BBO on the other hand will support the bridge competitions for the online Championship. “BBO is a multi-annual partner of the Polish Bridge Union and is also a platform well-known to every sports bridge player in the world,” said member of the Organising Committee, Marcin Waslowicz. Much like Tornelo, BBO has supported many high caliber bridge events online and continues to do so with this Championship as its next big competition.

Marking the first FISU World University Championship since the cancellation of FISU WUC events this year because of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 FISU WUC Mind Sports online will take place from 26-30 October. Fans can view one highlight match of the day in each discipline on Twitch and YouTube, bringing action to university sports fans from around the globe.
