2010 WUC Woodball Update: Singles Finals and Closing Ceremony

KAMPALA The last day of competition at the 3rd World University Woodball Championship started with the Men’s and Women’s singles finals. The 12 best ranked players from the 2 previous rounds went on to decide the final individual standings.

 

FISU EC member Silvanus LampteyIn the women’s competition, after the final 24 gates, Hsin I Tseng from Chinese Taipei took Gold medal, becoming World University Woodball Champion with a final round of 113 and 321 total. Silver medal went to Ying Chi Peng also from Chinese Taipei with a final round of 109 and 323 total. Cho Kwan Ng from Hong Kong concluded the final round with 108 strokes, totalling 336 strokes to collect the bronze medal.

Medal Podium Men’s SinglesThe Men’s Singles competition final was won by Sumariyanto Ahris from Indonesia with a final round of 100 strokes, totalling 308. Meng Hung Tsai from Chinese Taipei concluded with 102 strokes and 310 total, while Chia Hao Chang from Chinese Taipei set 103 strokes in the final round and 339 in total.

 The Team competition was won by Chinese Taipei in both men’s and ladies categories. Hong Kong and Uganda finished respectively in silver and bronze positions, also in both men’s and ladies final rankings.

 

Closing Ceremony

The Closing Ceremony of the 3rd World University Woodball Championship concluded the 4 day proceedings with a high note. Closing speeches from FISU Executive Committee member Silvanus Lamptey and local Organising Committee President Vincent Kisenyi were shortly followed by the return of the FISU flag, as a host for the 2012 edition is still to be found.

 

Medal Podium Women’s TeamThe ceremony concluded with the local organising committee, under the patronage of the International Woodball Federation, attributing ‘Woodball Student Ambassador ‘distinctions to an athlete of each team that will in future, together with the remaining partners, assist in the development of the sport at university level.

Just as in the two previous editions, Taipei City (TPE) in 2004 and Bangkok (THA) in 2006, this edition hosted eleven teams in competition. The delegations present in Kampala (UGA) were: Estonia, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan, Tanzania, Chinese Taipei, Zambia and Uganda. Three continents were therefore represented – Asia (49%), Africa (49%) and Europe (2%).

A total of 55 athletes (31 male and 24 female) and 24 officials participated in the 4-day competition.

In all, seven categories of competition made up the 3rd WUC Woodball – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, men’s team and women’s team.

In the medal standings, Chinese Taipei dominated by winning 52% of the total medals attributed. Hong Kong was second with 29% and the home team of Uganda was third with 14%. The only other team to get on the medal table was Indonesia (5%).
