Commanding semifinal wins for the University of Wollongong and the University of the Republic set up the grand finale to this event's inaugural edition: the men’s gold medal game.
Considered a bit of a dark horse heading into the tournament, the University of Wollongong earned their bid to win the University World Cup with a clinical 2-0 victory over the Autonomous University of Mexico State.
Led by the high-scoring Beattie brothers, the Australian student-athletes will take on the Uruguayan — the University of the Republic. With a mix of sure-footed artistry and hard-nosed football play, the boys from Montevideo bring an adaptable and effective brand of football.
A one-time Summer Universiade football player himself, University of the Republic head coach Alejandro Heguy Charamelo says it feels as if fate is on the Uruguayan side.
“As a Uruaguan, football is our way of life. We feel playing for the final is our bit of destiny,” Charamelo said. “We will try. We will try. What I know is that we will fight from the first minute to the ninetieth.”
