FISU Executive Committee holds successful meeting in Brasilia ; announces new dates for Chengdu 2021

In its meeting hosted in Brasilia on 24 and 25 June by the Brazilian Confederation of University Sports (CBDU), the FISU Executive Committee announced the new dates for the Chengdu 2021 World University Games: the event will now take place from 28 July to 8 August 2023 in the Chinese city.

Postponed by one year in 2021 because of the COVID pandemic, the summer edition of the FISU Games was postponed again this year for the same reason. Although it will now be held in 2023 the event will keep its original Chengdu 2021 name.

Age limit and eligibility of student athletes will be adapted to allow the participation of all students that were eligible in 2021 and 2022.

The Organizing Committee will propose the games model during the next EC meeting in November 2022

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was the first time that the EC could meet face-to-face since 2020.

“While online conferences are and will remain useful, it is also necessary to meet in person when we have important issues to discuss, including some that concern the future of FISU,” said Leonz Eder, FISU Acting President. “We were particularly happy to see each other again and it has resulted in a productive meeting in great place and a warm atmosphere.”

“It was the first time that CBDU, in its 83-year history, held a FISU Executive Committee meeting. This is extremely important for us, and it comes at a very opportune moment,” said Luciano Cabral, CBDU President and FISU Acting 1st Vice President. “It shows the strength of Brazilian university sport and our work as one of the best national university federations in the world.”

In Brazil, the EC took some important decisions, including the following ones:

Russia and Belarus : The EC has prolonged its decision regarding the non-participation of the Russian and Belarus athletes in FISU events until the end of 2022. For the year 2023 the decision will be taken in October.

Financial Support to Ukraine students-athletes – Ukrainian competitors registered for the Futsal and Orienteering World University Championship will receive some financial support from FISU. For the following events, such assistance will be decided case by case. FISU has already assisted Ukraine for the participation to the Sport Climbing Championship in Austria

Relocated events confirmed – The 2022 FISU University World Cup Combat Sports (21-30 September) moved from Ekaterinburg (RUS) to Samsun (TUR), the 2022 FISU University World Cup 3x3 Basket (27-29 October) moved from Xiamen (CHN) to Istanbul (TUR) and the 2022 FISU World University Championship Beach Volleyball (6-10 September) moved from Lake Placid (USA) to Maceio (BRA) have all been confirmed.

Next FISU EC meeting – It will be held in November 2022 in Brussels, Belgium.
