FISU EC Meets in Lausanne – Day 1

LAUSANNE Today, May 26th, the FISU Executive Committee held the first day of its three-day board meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, scheduled from May 26th to 28th.

The meeting started with a word from Swiss EC member Leonz Eder who warmly welcomed the EC members in his country. After the approval of the minutes of the EC meeting in Erzurum (January 2011), FISU President George E. Killian, Treasurer Danzandorj Bayasgalan, Internal Auditor Adrian Gagea and the Secretary-General/CEO Eric Saintrond presented their reports.

Stefan BerghAfter the coffee break Vice-President Stefan Bergh, Chair of the Development Committee (CDSU) presented its report giving an overview of the projects of the different Continental Associations, as well of the FISU membership development. At the next General Assembly in August, at least 7 countries will apply for FISU membership, i.e. Anguilla, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Syria, Swaziland and Zambia.

Verena BurkNext, Verena Burk, Chair of the Women’s Committee presented its report. Mrs. Burk gave some information about the planned Women’s Round Table conference that will take place in Shenzhen with participants of the BWF, FIBA, FITA, IAAF, WKF, UNESCO and IOC addressing women in sports issues. The Women’s Chair also gave some info on the ‘Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport’, which the Finnish NUSF signed this year, being the first FISU MA to do so. The Declaration provides the principles that should guide action intended to increase the involvement of women in sport at all levels and in all functions and roles. The Women’s Committee proposes that the FISU MA present at the Shenzhen SU sign the declaration during the Round Table conference with the ISFs. Mrs. Burk also presented the 6 candidates for the 2nd FISU Women and Sport Award, i.e. Costa Rica, Ghana, Ireland, Kenya, Philippines and Slovakia.

After lunch, 2011 Universiade host Shenzhen presented its progress report. First an update was given by the SU Dept., with CTI Summer Stavros Douvis. SU Director Marc Vandenplas gave an update of the Shenzhen preparations. CIC Chair Omar Al Haj and CIC member Shen Zhen explained the accreditation process while Dr. Rink, Chair of the Medical Committee gave an overview of the health and hygiene precautions, as well as catering and medical treatment. Pedro Dias and Malumbethe Ralethe gave an update of the protocol inspection visit.

Next the floor was given to the Shenzhen OC delegates. All the new venues have been completed and handed over for use at the end of April. Moreover, the maintenance and renovation of old venues and the construction of temporary venues have all been completed as well. In total, sixty venues will be used for the Universiade, including 21 newly constructed venues, 29 renovated venues and 10 temporary venues. During the next months prior to the Games, the OC will focus on the training of teams and venue operations. On May 4th, which marked the 100-day countdown to the Universiade, Shenzhen organized ‘Welcome the Universiade’ activities throughout the city for those involved in the preparations. The torch relay has also been launched. From May to July 24 test events are planned, while competitions managers and venue operational teams have assumed their positions.

After the session of Day 1, the EC members attended the inauguration of the fourth building of the Maison du Sport Internationale (MSI), where the FISU Lausanne Office will occupy the third floor. The guests of the inauguration, in presence of IOC President Jacques Rogge, could also witness a temporary exhibition of poster art with vintage FISU posters from the early Universiades and World University Championships.
