FISU 21 September 2018

BUDAPEST – After last years’ great success, the Hungarian University Sports Federation organized the 3rd International Day of University Sport, which was officially endorsed by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO).

The Hungarian students joined university students worldwide who were taking part in the event. The partner institutions of the Hungarian University Sports Federation (HUSF) organized sport days on 36 locations for the 94% of the full time students. Over 180.000 students had the opportunity to choose between more than 160 sports.

The rectors of 13 universities ordered a break for the sports day to promote healthy living, this affected 45% of all the full time students. In the capital city the central event was the „Budapest University Sports Festival”, where approximately 20.000 students took part. Under the patronage of the National Union of Students in Hungary, the National University of Public Services, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the Eötvös Loránd University were the main organizers of the occasions in Budapest, where students could try casual sports, military race and “college sports”, like beerpong too.

Utilizing the rector break, students could visit the Inclusive Sports Day, where they could try Para sports with para athletes. During the evening the aerobic lovers had the chance to move with 580 people for the dynamic music. The 35rd 5vös5 5km traditional running competition started at 5:05 PM in front of the Eötvös Loránd University, where the Olympic 5athlon took part as well – 980 people crossed the finish line.

Besides the running, the ‘Charity Health-walk’ took place for the third time, where the institutional leaders, rectors, chancellors, university sport leaders and, of course, municipal leaders walked with the guidance of Prof. Dr. Ádám Kiss, HUSF president. The participants made their offerings for the „Tégya Pető Intézet Gyermekeiért Alapítvány” – Fund of Pető Institute for disabled children.

Among the over 160 sports, the most interesting ones are listed from the countryside institutions where approximately 30.000 students took part. The media activity was very high, the nationwide offline and online media, especially sports televisions, all conveyed about the opening event. Dr. Tünde Szabó, Hungarian sport minister praised the importance of university sports and drew attention to the importance of everyday physical activity.
