A new Asian University Games concept presented at FISU’s continental governing body’s General Assembly

KUALA LUMPUR – With the World University Badminton Championship underway concurrently and the recently hosted FISU-AUSF (Asian University Sports Federation) Strategic Dialogues, the Malyasian capital has been the focal point of the university sport movement with the Malaysia University Sports Council also hosting the 10th AUSF General Assembly over the weekend. 24 FISU member associations were in attendance at this important meeting.

The meeting was opened with the checking of mandates and the formal roll call of member federations. Offical speeches were made by the Malaysia University Sports Council Chairman and guests; FISU 1st Vice President, President of European University Sports Federation, President of FISU Oceania and AUSF Honorary President.

After approval of the agenda and minutes of the 9th General Assembly, AUSF President Xue presented the Presidents report. This report highlighted key achievements for AUSF over the past two years. These key achievements included:

– Successful attribution of championship events across the region
– Regular education projects including strategic dialogue and joint seminar with FiSU Oceania
– Establishment of five regions within the continent to ensure a more active member engagement
– Project work completed by the five AUSF sub committees
– Establishment of a partnership with KELME

AUSF Secretary General Kenny Chow followed with a report on future hosting of the Asian University Games and not positive progress of collaborations with FISU Oceania and success of the joint seminar in 2017. The AUSF Secreatry General also noted the national university sport federation membership applications received and approved, and recognized the secretariat’s office work on this.

The Treasurer’s and Internal Auditors report were then presented to members. Financial reports were also presented, with AUSF thanking FISU for their continued funding support.

The AUSF Education Committee presented on three key events held in the past two years in the region. These education events included the Education Committee meeting, AUSF-NUSF workshop and the FISU-NUSF seminar. The 2019 calendar of events were also presented to the delegates in attendance.

The Public Relations Committee report followed. Key priorities for the past two years focused on further improving FISU relationships, hosting FISU World University League and University World Cup events in Asia, cooperative relationships with other Continental University Sport Federations, the hosting of Asian Pacific Futsal and cheerleading championships, collaboration with international sporting federations and advances in AUSF promotion of sponsorship support.

AUSF Technical Committee shared information relating to 2017 championships including Archery, 3×3 Basketball, Futsal and Cheerleading. The report also highlighted 2018 championships in the sports of 3×3 Basketball and Football. The 2029 championship calendar was presented, and including Karate, 3×3 Basketball and Badminton. The committee also presented the concept of the Asian University Games. This biennial event will consist of priority and optional sports. AUSF encouraged the Asian National University Sport Federations to consider hosting this event, which will take place for the first time in 2020.

The AUSF Development Committee reported on activities over the past two years, and focused on increasing the active engagement of non-active AUSF members. The committee also spoke in depth about the need to balancing the needs and input of active members of the federation. This latter part included providing opportunities for more students to compete in events such as the Asian University Games where students will represent universities rather than countries.

Delegates also heard progress reports for the 2019 AUSF Football Cup to be held in JinJiang, China; Karate Championships to be held in Macau China; Futsal Championships to be held in UAE; and the 3×3 Basketball, Badminton Championships and the FISU-NUSF seminar, with this trifecta of events to be held on the island of Taiwan in 2019.

During the Executive Committee meeting, the AUSF HELP program was agreed upon. The HELP program is supported by key sponsorship funds enabling financial assistance to member federations with a per capital of USD 3,500 (£2,700/€3,000) or less. These funds will enable more member federations to compete in sporting and educational events held in 2019 and 2020. Funding will be on a co-sharing basis, with AUSF covering 75% of total cost up to a maximum of USD 1,000 per applicant.

During the meeting, it was also announced that China will offer 20 scholarships, thus enabling student-athletes to apply for scholarships to any university in China. The AUSF will distribute more information about this to its membership at a later date.

Four new members were officially welcomed to the AUSF family: Timor Leste, Brunei, Lao and Myanmar. All federations expressed their desire to be active members of their continental federation.

AUSF and FISU Oceania presented a joint report, during which a Memorandum of Understanding between the two continental federations was signed. The two key joint projects they spoke about were the FISU-NUSF seminar and the Futsal & Cheerleading Asian Championships. Both projects were successful and AUSF and FISU Oceania look forward to working together on more joint projects during the next MOU period, which run through 2019 and 2020.

AUSF also presented KELME as a new sponsor involved in university sport among the continent. KELME and AUSF signed a one-year agreement, with the option to extend after this initial period.
