FISU holds strategic meetings with Asia and Oceania Continental Associations on Australia's Gold Coast

The inaugural FISU-NUSF Seminar kicked off this past Sunday night with a spectacular cultural welcome from indigenous performers on Australia’s Gold Coast. FISU First Vice-President Leonz Eder followed thereafter, officially opening the event.


At the behest of Mr. Eder, the delegation took a moment of silence to remember Honorary FISU President George E. Killian who passed away last week.

Hosted by Asian University Sports Federation (AUSF) and FISU Oceania at Bond University, delegates from 17 countries and regions from Asia and Oceania brought the energy from the opening night to day one of the seminar.


FISU President Oleg Matytsin joined the seminar with a video welcome message as he encouraged the delegations to work together to realize the FISU global strategy. The seminar continued with presentations from FISU Oceania President Martin Doulton and Vice Chair of FISU’s Development Committee, Shen Zhen.



AUSF Assessor Kairat Zakiryanov engaged the attendees with an overview of AUSF and its active role in hosting FISU events, including Summer and WInter Universiades, World University Championships and the 3x3 Basketball World University League. Afterwards, Mr. Doulton provided insight into FISU Oceania and how it engages with its members to develop sport at universities.

Representatives from the Federation of University Sports of China, Malaysian University Sports Council, Macau University Sports Federation and the Student Sports Federation of the Republic of Kazakhstan generously shared their event hosting experience.



Australian University Sport’s Sport and Operations Manager Natalia Broom took the delegation memers through a best practice example of event management with an overview of how the Australian University Games are conducted.

Even in its first years, the International Day of University sport has proven to be a widely successful in promoting sport on campus and in the community. With a collection of university sport leaders together, the delegates took part in a case study where they highlighted the best practices of the event in their country and started to think about concepts for the 2018 sport celebration.



“The seminar is already proving to be an excellent opportunity for each federation to learn best practice and share information with each other,” said Mr. Eder.


 The event included an Australian BBQ with a presentation of some Australian wildlife which included FISU First Vice-President Leonz Eder getting close with a crocodile
