FASU Elective General Assembly in Addis Ababa re-elects Ralethe as its President

ADDIS ABABA – The General Assembly of FASU, held in Addis Ababa, the Capital of Ethiopia, was attended by 24 members out of the total membership of 26 countries. This was considered as a huge success for FASU and its EC. Only Egypt and Malawi were absent.

During the GA, FASU President Malumbete Ralethe welcomed the delegates and guests, among them EUSA President Adam Roczek and Vice-President Leonz Eder and Laurent Briel, Director FISU for the Development and the NUSF relations. The two EUSA representatives presented gifts to both the FASU leadership and the President of the Ethiopian Public Universities Sports Association, thanking them for the invitation and hospitality. The Director of the Development presented the FISU plaque and underlined the great work done by the President of the EPUSA, Mr. Abbay Belayehun, to welcome all the delegations for this General Assembly.

FASU President Malumbete Ralethe re-elected

The statutory reports such as the report from the President, the activity report from the Secretary General and the financial report were accepted by the delegates. The GA approved the amendments to the statutes and internal regulations and adopted the budget for the next period. Ivory Coast and Sudan were also approved as new members.

As a main topic, the elections of the new EC received much attention, since four candidates were presented for the FASU presidency. Two of them, Benjamin Naobeb (NAM) and Jacob Nteere (KEN) withdrew their candidacies. The outgoing President, Malumbete Ralethe (RSA) was re-elected in the first round with 16 votes, while Leopold Senghor (SEN) got 8 votes. The GA elected Saasi Ghedir (ALG) as 1st Vice-President and Jacob Nteere as 2nd Vice-President. Peninnah Kabenge (UGA) was re-elected Secretary-General. The new treasurer is Ibrahim Bangura from Sierra Leone, and Liberty Maidza from Zimbabwe will act as Internal Auditor.

Finally the General Assembly nominated the former FASU President Hassan Chikh (ALG) and the former Secretary-General Shadrack Adeoti (NGR) as Honorary Members.
