10th Eastern African University Games kicked off in Nairobi

NAIROBI – The 10th Eastern Africa University Games kicked off Friday 16 December at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Kenyatta University Nairobi Kenya.

According to the games’ secretary general, Simon Munayi, 43 universities are scheduled to participate in the championships that will bring together universities from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

“Preparations are over and we are expecting officials from participating nations. Teams will compete in 18 disciplines, with most matches being hosted at the JKUAT grounds, while others will be at Kenyatta University.” Munayi also said they expect more than 4,000 participants in the biennial games that will end on 22 December.

Uganda’s Ndeje University, who won the last edition held at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in 2014, have dominated the games with ease, but Kampala University are boasting that they have the best football team as they strive to clinch the regional title this year, KU also has Olympians like Winnie Nanyondo (middle distance runner) and Halima Nakaayi (800m) in the team.  

Sports to be competed at the events include football, basketball, volleyball, handball, hockey, chess, karate, badminton, tennis, softball, table tennis, woodball, netball, athletics and scrabble.
