FISU America 3×3 Basketball qualifier in Tegucigalpa 2026 sets record attendance and sends women from Carleton University (CAN) and men from Yale University (USA) to the FISU World Cup in October.

From 25 to 28 May, Honduras hosted an official FISU America event for the first time, bringing together more than 130 student athletes from 12 countries across the continent in a true celebration of university sport.

The eighth edition of the championship featured 31 university teams, comprising 14 women’s and 17 men’s teams, representing 12 countries across the continent: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the United States, Honduras, Mexico, Peru and Puerto Rico. The teams competed for the continental title and for places at the FISU 3×3 University World Cup, which will take place in Macau, China in October.

Champions of the Americas

The finals showcased the highest level of competition in the tournament, with high-intensity matches where the teams fought until the very last moment to secure their qualification for the University World Cup.

In the women’s competition, Canada’s Carleton University (CU) were crowned continental champions after defeating the University of Saskatchewan (USask), also from Canada, in the grand final. Third place went to the University of Chile (UCHILE).

Meanwhile, in the men’s competition, Yale University (YALE) from the United States claimed the continental title after defeating Universidad Anáhuac Querétaro (UAQ) from Mexico in the final. Third place went to Universidad Nacional de La Matanza (UNLaM) from Argentina.

Thanks to their continental titles, Carleton University and Yale University have qualified for the 2026 FISU 3×3 University World Cup in Macau, China where they will represent the Americas against the world’s best university teams.

The awards and closing ceremony took place at the Olympic Village in Tegucigalpa and was attended by officials from FISU America, the Honduran University Sports Association (ADUH) and the Francisco Morazán National Pedagogical University.

During the ceremony, the president of FISU America, Alim Maluf Neto, thanked the entire organising committee for their outstanding work throughout the championship and highlighted the success achieved by Honduras in organising this historic edition.

One of the most significant moments of the closing ceremony was the handover of the FISU America flag. The flag was handed over by América Alvarado to Alim Maluf Neto and subsequently to Ignacio Gómez Pérez, president of the Chilean National University Sports Federation (FENAUDE), representing the country that will host the next edition of FISU America 3×3.

With record participation, a high standard of competition and an organisation that set a precedent for Honduran university sport, the FISU America 3×3 Tegucigalpa 2026 closes its doors, leaving a significant mark on the history of FISU America and paving the way for new opportunities for the development of university sport in the region.
