SINGAPORE – Ten countries, sixteen teams: 343 officials and athletes will compete for glory in the 6th World University Floorball Championships to be held in Singapore from 18 to 22 June, 2014. The event kicked off with CISCA and the Local Organizing Committee conducting their 1st HOD Technical Meeting at the newly built Singapore Sports Hub, OCBC Arena.

Says Mr Alan Koh, Chairman, WUFC 2014 Organising Committee, “It is an honour for Singapore to be the first city outside of Europe to host the WUFC. The participation of ten countries and sixteen teams is the highest number yet in this series of competitions. Many Singaporeans including me will be able to see the high standard of play by the best floorball players from around the world. Here, in addition to watching these top-notch games, I hope that Singaporeans will also take the opportunity to learn from the best. I am also very glad that the 2014 Championship will be held at the new Singapore Sports Hub OCBC Arena with support from Sport Singapore.”

HoD meeting

Having made its way into the 2015 SEA Games next year – another milestone event that Singapore will be hosting – the sport of floorball has definitely caught the interest of Singaporeans in many ways.  Mr Mohd Sani, President of the Singapore Floorball Association who has been closely involved in the acceptance and development of the sport in Singapore and the region adds, “Over the past 10 years, floorball has grown from being a niche activity to one that is played as a mainstream sport in many schools and institutions. It is easy to play this fast-paced team sport and the challenge of perfecting a variety of dribbling and shooting skills makes floorball extremely attractive to many youths in Singapore. The popularity of the sport has gained traction in the region. With floorball’s inclusion in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, we expect to see further developments in the skills of our players and in the areas of coaching and refereeing.”

Heads of Delegations of the participating countries were given a brief run-down of the Championship regarding ceremonies, transportation, accommodation, medical, meals and more.  Jersey colors were chosen and the decision was made.  Teams and delegates seemed to be ready to get things started and when predictions were asked, HODs were fearful of any predictions as they expected all teams to be strong.
