Today, October 24th, Anikó Németh-Móra, Director of the International Weightlifting Federation visited the FISU Headquarters in Brussels.
She was welcomed by FISU President George E. Killian, who spend two days at the FISU HQ after returning from his meeting at the Kremlin with the Russian President, Mr. Putin, regarding the bid of Kazan to host the 2011 Summer Universiade.
Present also at the meeting were FISU Director-General Eric Saintrond and FISU Director of Education Kole Gjeloshaj.
It was agreed upon that the IWF will stage a first FISU sanctioned World University Weightlifting Championship in 2008. In the past the IWF already staged nine University championships, however none of them were FISU sanctioned.
By embracing the sport of weightlifting as a university sport, FISU adds another sport discipline to its broad range of sports, bringing the number of FISU sanctioned sports to 32 for the World University Championships, 7 for the Winter Universiade and 12 for the Summer Universiade, thus totalling 51 different sports.
