2010 WUC Wrestling Update: Day 3 of Competitions

29 October 2010

JPN vs. BLR

TORINO Thursday, October 28th, with good weather sunshine finally in the morning, the day started with elimination rounds in the competition hall for FW 48 – 55 – 59 – 63 and 72 kg categories. Only the women competed yesterday.

The Greco-Roman wrestlers made their final entries for the following categories 55 – 66 – 84 and 120kg, followed by a medical examination and weigh-in of course in the afternoon.

The competitions of day 3 were therefore repechages and finals for the FW categories mentioned above, finals which were broadcasted on national television RAI from 5:30pm onwards.

The women’s freestyle competition ended yesterday, with the award of the cup for women’s teams.

Ibrahim Cicioglu, FISU Technical Chair for WrestlingIbrahim Cicioglu, FISU Technical Chair for Wrestling, was very satisfied with the level of the athletes participating: “At the end of this intensive year comes the FISU World University Wrestling Championship and we can say we are happy with such a record of participation and so many good wrestlers who won medals at senior continental and world championships. To name a few: Pirozhkova Elena (USA), the 2010 Senior Female World Champion in Moscow, Ligeti from Hungary, the bronze medallist a the 2010 World Championship and Riza Kayaalp (TUR), the gold  medallist of the 2010 European Championship and 3 times junior World Champion. Additionally, more than 15 champions and medallists from the junior level are participating in this FISU event. This is good for the improvement of our sport in university level. Technically, the organization is running smoothly and for this reason, we give great thanks to the Organizing Committee, and especially the referee commission of the Italian Wrestling Federation. The impression from the delegations is that they seem really satisfied about the level of the competitions and the management of this event and they totally agree that wrestling should be involved as a compulsory sport in the Summer Universiade. If this could be achieved, the number of participating countries and athletes will be duplicated.”

At the end of the third competition day, the medals and souvenirs were awarded for the following women categories: FW 48 – 55 – 59 – 63 and 72 kg respectively by FISU Executive Committee delegate, Mr.Sinisa Jasnic and Mr. Riccardo D’Elicio; President CUS Torino, Dr.Roland Questel, FISU Medical Committee delegate and Mr. Roberto Polloni, Vice-President CUS Torino; Mr.Mezziane Hasnaoui, FISU International Control Committee delegate and Ms. Loredana Segreto, Administrative Director of the University of Torino; Mr.Ibrahim Cicioglu, FISU Technical Committee Chair and Mr. Marco Mezzalama, Vice-Rector of the Polytechnic University of Torino, and Mr.Aldo Albanese, Vice-President of FIJLKAM.
