Mr. JasnicTORINO – Yesterday, October 26th, all WUC participants were present at the Palazzetto Ruffini, the competition venue, to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 9th World University Wrestling Championship. CISCA Chair and FISU EC member Sinisa Jasnic welcomed all participants, stating that FISU is proud of such a huge success for this event with of a total of 29 countries already accredited, and awaiting still 3 or 4 more countries for tomorrow. He thanked the CUSI and CUS Torino and wished all participants great success in their competitions.
Mr. SbriglioRiccardo D’Eliccio, President of the Organizing Committee also welcomed all participants in the City of Torino and Giuseppe Sbriglio, Assessor of the Municipality of Torino officially opened this FISU event.
Daigoro Timononi pronounced the athletes’ oath, followed by Gianpiero Gabbiani, pronouncing the referee’s oath.
FILA, the International Wrestling Federation is well represented at this FISU Championship, with the attendance of the FILA President Mr.Raphael Martinetti, the FILA Vice-President Mr.Matteo Pellicone (also President of FIJLKAM) and the FILA Secretary-General Mr. Michel Dusson.
During 5 days, male and female student-wrestlers will now compete under the FISU emblem and the spirit well defined by its motto : “Excellence in Mind and Body”;
The first day of competitions finished with the repêchages and finals of the Free Style 55-66-84-120 kg categories.
The Freestyle 55kg podium was mounted by athletes from Russia, Turkey and Iran winning gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. The medallists for the FS 66kg were from Japan, Bulgaria and Tajikistan.
The FS 84kg were won by athletes from Moldova, Ukraine and Turkey, while the FS 120kg were won by athletes from Russia, Ukraine and Hungary.
