CORUM – The Opening Ceremony of 12th World University Wrestling Championship hosted by Hitit University took place in the Atatürk Sports Hall on 25 October 2016.
Necmettin Kılıç, Çorum Governer; Salim Uslu, MP of Justice and Development Party and TGNA Chief, Muzaffer Külcü, Mayor; Prof. Dr. Reha Metin Alkan, Rector of Hitit University; Prof. Dr. Kemal Tamer, the Head of Turkish University Sports Federation; Leopold Germain, FISU Vice-President; the representatives of the city’s state institutions and organizations, around 250 athletes from 26 countries, 100 coaches and staff and students of Hitit University as well as the citizens from Çorum were present at the Opening Ceremony of the championship.
Prof. Dr. Kemal Tamer, the Head of Turkish University Sports Federation stated, “My sincere thanks must go to the Hitit University for hosting this great event.”
Prof. Dr. Reha Metin Alkan, The head of Organizing Committee said, “We take justified pride of having a great many challenging champions especially in wrestling in our city and hosting this great event.”
FISU Vice-President Senghor
Muzaffer Külcü, Mayor of Çorum, stated, “The first World Wrestling Championship was organized in İstanbul in 1968, the third championship was organized in Ankara in 1998 and, today, after 18 years, the 12th World University Championship is now being organized here in Çorum.”
Salim Uslu, Çorum MP and TGNA Chief said, “Çorum has proved its success by undertaking the organization of an international championship. Today, there are 26 countries here.”
Leopold Germain Senghor, FISU Vice-President stated, “I am glad to be in this lovely city on behalf of FISU for this important event which has already been organized 11 times since its beginning and now for the 3rd time in Turkey. Today, we are all together here to participate in the 12th World University Wrestling Championship.”
After the protocol speeches, Necmettin Kılıç, Çorum Governor officially opened the 12th World University Wrestling Championship. The FISU Anthem was played and the oaths of athletes and referees were pronounced respectively. Following the Opening Ceremony the first competitions began.
The Championship lasts until 30 October. The competitions will be held at 02:00 pm every day in the determined dates and finals will take place at 06:00pm.
