YAKUTSK – The long-awaited debut of Russia’s active champion Vasily Egorov in the weight 49 kilogram took place yesterday 12 September at the 6th World University Boxing Championship in Yakutsk, Russia. The 20-years old Yakutian student defeated Lee Inchan from South Korea after a great struggle.
One could clearly see that the debut performance of Egorov was pretty tough, especially in front of a home crowd. That’s why the first round was even-tempered with successful attacks from both sides. Even more, the rival had a brave spirit and always took initiative actions firsts. As statistic shows, Lee Inchan had 70 fights, in which 60 of them he gained the victory. 10 of the fights were taken by knock-out which means the Korean was a great contender. Once Vasily could get used to the ring an gained confidence, he took an initiative role in the next rounds. The cheers of the home crowd gave him wings and he started to dominate the fight resulting in a victory. “The first round is always tough. Frankly, I was very nervous before the fight”, Vasily admitted. “I waited for this for three long days. The rival was tough, but I learned his tactics during the fight and then won. I’m going to prepare for the final now.” Vasily’s rival for final will be Arunbolt Gansalem (MGL) who competently beat Olzhan Baynzanov (KAZ).
The final fights are taking a place on 14 September.
The Uzbekistan national team in Yakutsk for the WUC Boxing is coached by master of sports Rustam Saidov, who is one of the most titled boxers in Uzbekistan. He won the bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, the 2003 world championship and he is also the champion of the Asia championship and the Asian games. “I was a world student champion in 2004, in Antalya. That’s why I am confident about the level of this competition. I was kindly surprised by Yakutia in general. We could see the permafrost which is amazing! I could never imagine that I’ll be able to see ice sculptures during the summertime in Russia”, he joked.
