MISKOLC – After the opening ceremony held in the Diósgyőr medieval castle in the heart of the city of Miskolc, Sunday marked the start of the competition featuring the men’s and women’s sprints which took place within the landscapes of beautiful Lillafüred.
Among waterfalls and hanging gardens with many spectators to enjoy the weather in the last weekend of July, no fewer than 84 female athletes and 112 male athletes competed to win the first medals of the 20th World University Orientation Championship organized in Miskolc, Hungary once again after 30 years.
In women’s competition, the battle can be summarized with a race between the Czech athlete Denisa Kosova, Finland’s Maija Sianoja and the Russian racer Anna Dvorianskaia. On this course of 3.3km with 115m of altitude and enhanced with 21 controls, it is the Czech athlete who eventually prevailed with 9 seconds over the two chasers who shared the silver medal.
In the men’s race, Switzerland has long hoped to win on this course of 3.6 km and 23 controls, first through Florian Schneider, the student from Bern who led the rankings for the majority of the race before teammate Jonas Egger, also from Bern takes over first place. Unfortunately for the Swiss delegation, a few moments later it’s the British Kristian Mark Jones who finally wins the first men’s title of the competition in 13 minutes and 49 seconds confirming the good form of the British team that, like the Swiss, has three athletes among the top 10 of the event.
Tomorrow, the long distance race is scheduled which will see athletes compete on a race that should last about 1:20 for men and 1:05 for women.
