13th WUC Chess – Day 5 of Competitions

24 August 2014

KATOWICE – No round was planned in the morning at the 13th WUC Chess which was thus devoted to a promotion action with a tournament for the children of the region’s clubs. Those children had a chance to play on the same material and in the same venue than the professional players offering them an exciting opportunity. At the same time their parents were invited to compete as well to promote chess throughout all generations.

In the official competition, only one round was planned in the Park Hotel Diament of Katowice (POL) yesterday 23 August, but what a round.

In the women’s competition, Klaudia Kulon (POL) did not even have to finish her match to earn her World University Championship title since before the end of her match, her teammate Marta Bartel (POL) had offered her the gold medal after beating Munguntul (MGL). With this result, Munguntul who had to win all her final matches to have a chance to compete for the gold, let her chances go while Kulon drew against Armenia’s Gevvorgyan (WFM – Elo 2130), the first match of the week she could not win, but she nevertheless took the gold one day before the final round.

Behind her, in addition of Muguntul and Bartel, a third player will fight for the silver medal, Ding Yixin (CHN) being the third player with 5.5 points. Behind them two players can still hope for a podium as well with 5 points each, Zhang (CHN – WGM – Elo 2375) and Gevorgyan (ARM) will also have their role to play in race to the medals.

In the men’s tournament, 13 players were ranked within 0.5 points before the beginning of this 8th round. In the end of the day, two players took the lead with a victory for each. Bukashvin (RUS – GM – Elo 2603) took the best over the local player Jacek Tomczak (POL – GM – Elo 2562) while Grigoryan (ARM – GM – 2595) won a tough match against Jan Bernasek (CZE). The Armenian and the Russian lead the tournament before the last round to be held on Sunday with 6 points. Behind them, four players will also fight for the podium; indeed, with 5.5 points Yu (CHN), Sjugirov (RUS), Shimanov (RUS) and Andriasian (ARM) will all stand a chance to earn a medal in a tournament where the 11th first positions are held by FIDE Grand Master showing the exciting level displayed in the tournament.

On Sunday, 24 August, the last round will take place and will define the last five individual medallist – Klaudia Kulon being ensured of the women’s title – as well as the team results.
