ALMATY – At the conclusion of the Winter Universiade Games curling round robin – being held in the Almaty Arena, Kazakhstan – on Saturday (4 February), seven of the eight teams for the play-offs were decided. One tie-breaker is required on Sunday (5 February).
The tie-breaker will be between Switzerland and Great Britain’s women’s teams. Canada’s team, skipped by Kelsey Rocque, topped the women’s side of the draw, with skip Victoria Moiseeva’s Russian team and Isabella Wranaa’s Swedish team also qualifying.
Canada women won their final game 5-3 against Norway; Russia beat Switzerland 9-3 and Sweden defeated hosts Kazakhstan 13-5.
On the men’s side skip Bruce Mouat’s Great Britain qualified with nine wins from nine. They won their last round robin game 5-3 against Korea. Sweden, skipped by Gustav Eskilsson, Czech Republic lead by Lukas Klima, and defending champion nation, Norway also qualified on the men’s side.
Sweden beat Japan 10-3, while Czech Republic defeated Russia 8-5, in their last round robin games. Despite losing their last two round robin games, earlier wins in the draw helped, skip Steffen Walstad’s Norway to reach the play-offs.
