#WUAlmaty2017: Update Curling – Day 4

Winter Games 2 February 2017

ALMATY – The round robin stage of the Winter Universiade curling event, taking place in the Almaty Arena this week, passed its halfway point on Thursday, 2 February – there are three more days of round robin play to go.

Great Britain men remain unbeaten after a 10-1 win over hosts Kazakhstan and a close 5-4 win over Czech Republic. However, with four wins and two losses, Norway and Sweden are close on their heels. These teams also had two wins on Thursday.

Steffen Walstad’s Norwegian team beat USA 5-4 on Thursday morning, before beating Russia 7-4 in the evening. For Sweden, skipped by Gustav Eskilsson, they first defeated Russia 11-6, before going on to win against Canada 7-5 in the evening.

On the women’s side there was just one game for each of the ten teams competing. A 7-6 win for Great Britain over Norway sees them retain their place at the top of the standings, so far. However, Canada, Korea, Russia and Switzerland all follow closely behind in joint second place.

On Thursday, there were also wins for China (7-6 v Germany), Russia (6-5 v Sweden), Korea (14-2 v Kazakhstan) and Canada’s (6-5 v Switzerland) women’s teams.
