Snapshots, paint and dance lead into WU 2019

Winter Games 9 August 2018

KRASNOYARSK, RUSSIA — Touted as an international sporting and cultural event, the Universiade experience is one that extends beyond the competition arena. The event draws in people from all ages and stages of life, and illustrates the startling similarity between us all.

Just as a biathlete coming into the shooting range needs to change both his focus and heartbeat to hit five tiny targets fifty-meters away in seconds, the expert photojournalist matches this concentration as they shoot with similar precision. Both biathlete and photographer have just one chance to make the most of a moment – one makes it, the other captures it for prosperity.

Organisers of the Krasnoyarsk 2019 Winter Universiade are extending the spirit of the games all over the host country through a creative project contest.  Krasnoyarsk 2019 have announced eight winners from the project to bring the 29th Winter Universiade 2019 alive in more areas of Russia through music and dance performances, film and video works, theatrical productions and art exhibitions.

The projects were assessed by the competition jury, which included famous artists and cultural figures of the Krasnoyarsk Region, representatives of the Directorate of the Winter Universiade 2019, the Legislative Assembly, the Ministry of Culture and the Agency for Youth Policy and Implementation of Social Development Programmes of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The experts chose 8 best projects of various on-stage performance groups from Moscow, the Kemerovo Region, the Altai Region, the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic and the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

The contest winners include the concert programme My iz Siberi by the Siberian Kaleidoscope folk dance company of the Kemerovo Governor’s Dance Theatre. The performers will present folk dances and show the art of throat singing as a part of the winter Universiade cultural programme. The contest finalist from Krasnoyarsk will stage a unique performance adapted from the painting Boyarina Morozova by Vasily Surikov, combining theatre, modern choreography and a Siberian designers’ clothes show. The winner from Moscow will hold a music contest called Univervidenie among Russian university students. Its finalists will be chosen by the jury comprising famous Russian performers and producers. The project will end in a gala concert.
