2021 WU: 7 Venues locally embedded in Central Switzerland

Winter Games 5 May 2017

LUCERNE – The 2021 Winter Universiade will take place at seven different venues in Central Switzerland. Each venue will have a dedicated local team that organises the sport and non-sport programmes assigned to its venue. “We chose this approach because it ensures that the event will be locally embedded and each venue has very knowledgeable experts in the given sport”, explains Managing Director Urs Hunkeler. After several meetings in the past months the responsible people for each venue have been assigned. Recently, they all met for a first general meeting.

“It was very valuable to meet everyone”, says Dierk Beisel, who leads the venue team in Engelberg that will organise Curling, Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard. “Although we organise different sports there are many challenges ahead that we will share, so we look forward to share experiences and learnings too”, adds Dierk Beisel, who enjoyed the positive spirit. After the working meeting the group celebrated the kick-off of this adventure with a dinner at the Lucerne Fair, where the region of Andermatt runs a restaurant. As Andermatt-Realp is the venue for the biathlon events the setting couldn’t have been better.
