2021 Winter Universiade at Swiss Sport Parliament

The Swiss Sport Parliament unanimously approved the candidacy of Sion 2026 to be the official bid from Switzerland to host the Olympic Winter Games 2026. Before this important voting Urs Hunkeler, Managing Director of the Winter Universiade 2021 in Lucerne, had the opportunity to present the vision and the concept of the Winter Universiade 2021 to all the delegates of the Swiss Sport Federations present. It was the first time that the Swiss University Sport Federation got the chance to present this project to the Swiss Sport Parliament.

The representatives of the OC of the Youth Olympic Games 2020 in Lausanne also introduced their progress report to the Assembly. Both the President of Swiss Olympic, Jürg Stahl, and the Chairman of the bidding committee Sion 2026, Jean-Philippe Rochat, a former Universiade participant, highlighted the importance of the two multisport events for young athletes in Switzerland, the YOG 2020 and the WU 2021, for the development of Sport in Switzerland, but also as a milestone for the possible success of Sion 2026. The SUSF was represented by its President Andreas Csonka, also member of the Executive Board of Swiss Olympic, Urs Hunkeler from the OC Lucerne 2021 and Leonz Eder, Managing Director of the SUSF.
